Your clock's wonky...

I enjoyed that podcast a lot, flowed much better, no dead air, quicker and snappier. No complaints here this time.

I do notice that the 'what I watched last month' section is a lot like the commentary. It really only appeals to me if I've watched that show in question, otherwise I skip forward a bit.

Poor Naruto!

My ha'penny worth. The longer, mainstream shows (not just Naruto in particular) are necessary 'evils'. In Japan, they play primetime to the mainstream, get bums on seats and advertising revenue in the kitty, and it's the long running mass audience stuff that subsidises to some degree the niche and arty stuff.

You say that the saturation of Naruto is one of the things that lowers the availability of the obscure anime. That may be true to a degree, but I think it's a matter of balance as well. Without major successes like Naruto and One Piece and Case Closed, you won't get your Utawarerumonos and your Black Lagoons, the stuff that play late night to small audiences, and that have to make their money back on expensive DVD sales. It's the same right the way down the chain. Companies can't operate for long at a loss, so Viz, Funimation and so on in the US need the big hits, so do Manga, and MVM in the UK.

The current lack of confidence in the market has less to do with big hitters drowning out the niche titles, as it does with downturn in markets as a whole. The whole Geneon thing in 2007, the ADV and Sojitz thing last year, and Gonzo this year, none of that is down to anime, it's all down to a lack of cash.

As the ripples spread, there will be a drop in the amount of anime being made, but actually I think that the UK is best placed to weather the storm, as long as there are anime fans in the UK still buying discs. For the simple reason that the anime we get is a subset of the US market. The US market may contract as a result of fewer shows coming out of Japan, but we still have all those older shows that were never licensed in the UK in the first place. Look at MVM's current and recent catalogue, Slayers, Gravitation, Desert Punk, Solty Rei, all shows that aren't brand new. Solty Rei and Desert Punk are what three or four years old now, Gravitation is 8 or 9, Slayers is closer to fifteen. There are plenty of shows that we've missed out on that could eventually come here. Including a lot more of those niche titles.

Listening now, sounds good! Smile

Looking forward to the Naruto discussion. Twisted Evil

Edit: Yeah listening to the Naruto bit now.

Some interesting points raised, but I put it down to the marketing more than anything else. Be it Mazinger in the 70s, Dragonball in the 80s or whatever the biggest shonen titles have always whitewashed their comtemporaries so in that rspect little's changed. It's just that in recent years communcation has gotten quicker so western markets are starting to catching on to whatever's big. Of course America in particular is big on its advertising so of course you'll see it spread all over the place. Aside from a few magazine adverts, I've not seen much over here in this side outside of the London Expo (which I see mainly as a reflection of the online community, not the market Razz)

Best to ignore the hype, watch some, and then decide for yourself. The manga's much better imo but is even more popular. Kishimoto's a big Otomo fan, so if they ever let him do a non-shonen piece it could be very, very nice.

...and yes, I reckon Kino's Journey would still have gotten a release. Titles like Naruto don't make the older fanbase smaller, so why wouldn't it still sell the same numbers? I'd say the popularity of a title is a good thing. If anything, it's allowed Viz to put money into some very niche/arthouse manga series which I'm really looking forward to. ^^ As long as these companies stick to their roots (which they have been) I've no problem.
