No, I'm leaving that can of worms untouched.

I do have a question though.

Depending on your preference, have you ever found the opposite to be more appealing in an anime, and if so which one?

With me it's Steamboy.

I invariably choose original language/subs, and with Steamboy starring the voice of Anne Suzuki as Ray (who I liked in Returner, 9 Souls and Initial D: Driftracer), you'd think I'd go with subs again.

Also the dub has Anne Paquin as Ray, and her accent is... variable to say the least.

But somehow the Japanese dialogue in a film set in Victorian England just doesn't go. Also the English dub has some great regionalisation, with American, Mancunian, Yorkshire, London, Swedish and other accents. Also with actors like Patrick Stewart and Al Molina, it actually feels a bigger film.

That's my 'watch in dub' anime.

I haven't watched dubbed really up until now, I'm going to make an effort to watch Golgamesh, Cromartie, Excel Saga on sky so I can see if i prefer them to the actual anime.

I can imagine the Steamboy dub sounding better, the weird idea of Japanese Victorian times probably works out better with a Western cast! Period dramas could do with a Western twang, like - I'd like for Le Chevalier D'Eon dub to have a French accent, not going to happen though is it *sob* and then the Russians could be a Western voice with a terrible Russian accent like Sean Connery in The Hunt For Red October.

I'm sure lots of Western parody dubs would be sooooo much better than the original Bishie/Romance fests I've seen recently...if they existed! ^_^

I would have to agree that Steamboy is one of the most fitting dubs I've heard despite Anna Paquin's contribution.

Howl's Moving Castle wasn't a bad English dub, either, although I still think it would have been interesting to get someone with a Welsh accent to play Howl (read the book for that one Smile

).

I have to say, i do prefer the subtitled version of Cardcaptor Sakura over the dubbed version Wink

I normally watch anime dubbed, however.

I think it's mostly down to me having watched these a while ago before I started going subbed and really enjoying them. With GiTS:SAC because I'm used to them dubbed I watched the new series dubbed against my normal preference.

Out of sheer curiosity I watched Noir, all 26 episodes, subbed and didn't like it as much. Almost certainly due to me having first watched, and enjoyed, it dubbed.

All new series/films, with the exception of GiTS:SAC & Innocence, are subbed for me these days.

Interestingly I just started to watch Boogiepop Phantom, finally, and am watching it subbed even though it seems very similar in style to Lain which I wouldn't dream of rewatching subbed.

Final point for me is NEVER EVER EVER watch a Ghibli dubbed Wink

PS DUB, but only newer stuff or it's just so bad it's funny (think Iczer 3!) I'm a complete thilostine who hates having to read the bottom of the screen and miss out on all the visual goodly-goodness Very Happy

I normally watched anime dubbed as I'm lazy and can't be arsed to do all that reading.

I guess I'm for the argument that I want to watch anime as was originally intended (meaning in my own language without text all over the screen - same as how the Japanese watch their anime) but in all honesty I don't really care either way and will happily watch in either format...

I feel that if a Dub is done right then it makes all the difference, because if the dub sucks then it ruins the show.

Funimation dubs are generally the best mainly due to Chris bevens (sp) and Monica Rial, either being cast or working on the staff because they are true anime lovers and like to see it done properly prime examples are Kiddy grade and Burst angel.

Personally i dont tend to watch anime with subs, but i do watch asian cinema in its original recording with subs due to it keeps the feel of the movie intact i.e. Ong Bak's dub is terrible and i stopped watching after the first scene and chose to watch it in Thai.

Scripting can make or break a dub, you need to change the original text enough to make it flow well, but keep it faithful enough to the original so that you don't lose too much of the meaning, etc. The writers in america are getting much better at the nuances of translating anime, but often are the first ones critisized when it comes to complaints.

I would say along with the writers getting better I would say that the voice actors have gotten a lot better too.
