Most anime treat sex as something to be giggled about, as bit of "carry on" style innuendo (like nearly every single harem anime, for example), but what of those rare beasts, the ones that treat it in a mature manor?
Some that come to mind for me are Rumbling Hearts (which treats it as a normal part of relationships, whther its the first awkward fumblings or the normality of a loving relationship), Neon Genesis Evangelion (Misato and Kaji's relationship) and Gundam SEED (never fully shown on screen but its pretty obvious that Flay and Kira have sex at one point) _________________ Avatar: Misa Amane from Death Note

When I think about it, I have to agree, and while I can't from the top of my head think of another situation where sex has been portrayed in a tasteful manner in anime (except perhaps in Stand Alone Complex - but that's just heavily implied) I do agree that it is positive to a story if it uses it this way.
And am I the only person who had to read Ians post twice? I read "but what of those rare breasts...". _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

| Nana is another where sex and relationships are explored maturely. You will find that most things aimed at girls will usually treat it in that manner while boys' anime/manga will treat it as a fun pastime or make light of it. |

Well Gundam SEED it is more implied than anything - all you see is Kira getting dressed and Flay looking at him from bed in the nude (although shes mostly covered). Its the way there relationship changes after that moment which really confirms they did so.
I have to say the Ghost in the Shell manga isnt as tasteful.I think anyone whos read it will know what i mean.

heheeheeheeeheee .. you said "sex" *giggles immaturely*
//
On a serious note, the sereis that springs to mind is BGC Tokyo 2040 no actual sex but there were some pretty heavy implications going on. Macross Plus also had a sex scene done maturly, at least the "scene after".
Kare kano deals with sex properly too. _________________ ...

Oh lord, i havent seen that in ages. It was one of the first "grown up" (ie not about collecting monsters/monsters fighting monsters) anime i saw. I remember it being awesome. Dont recall that though, but then again it has been a few years.
I think a rewatch is in order! I dont have anything to see tomorrow

IIRC, wasnt that the bit that got some anime fans angry and accusing TRSI of "censorship" because they got the TV version not the uncut version? (which apprently isnt that much different anyway) _________________ Avatar: Misa Amane from Death Note

She, The Ultimate Weapon treats sex seriously even having a sex scene in the final episode although | Quote: | | when Chise's arm falls off it does spoil the moment a little |
There's a bit of minor lesbianism in Noir but that doesn't get further than a bit of hand holding and a kiss.
Paranoia Agent has a character who's a prostitute with a few scenes.
Other than those I don't have series with 'serious' sex scenes. |

| There are several scenes in Gravitation that accuse Shuichi and Yuki of having sex (i.e. bedroom scenes, darkened images that kind of fall backwards etc), but I think that's the closest I've ever seen. |

Has anyone mentioned Evanghelion yet, Misato/Kaji have a sex scene.
And Blue Gender treats sex really casually early on in the series sex is pretty matter-of-fact for the cast. It's not treated with any passion or romance, it's just casual sex.
It's probably more note-worthy as Yuji brings with him the sort of "anime" sensibilites that you'd expect, so he's really freaked out to see the others having sex. _________________ ...

Sounds like a fish out of water style thing, right?
Ive got another thread with a similar idea forming in my mind, will post later. Hopefully it will make some discussion like this thread has _________________ Avatar: Misa Amane from Death Note

Perfect Blue certainly isn't giggly about sex. In fact it's downright unsettling. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

You're right there, that scene, and I guess I'm thinking of the one you are is really quite unnerving, made all the more so by the fact it's animated AND not real (acted).
Just thought another show is Gligamesh, that also treats sex in a differnt ligth to the way anime usually treats it. I think I can think fo a few more shows where sex is hinted at and the characters don't really bother that it's going on. _________________ ...

Yeah once was enough for me, the person who lent it me was quite shocked I didnt like it, what worries me more is a significant percentage of Japanese dudes get their jollies off that kind of thing !
They seriously need to listen to a certain Tenacious D record |
