The Manga release of Otogi Zoshi is bugging me. Vols 4-6 are dubtitled and have dropped the extras. I want the translated subtitles and the extras...
So it's off to Region 1 and DVD Pacific. Idiocy number 1, they come to £12 apiece with postage. I could bunch them together and get them for £32 saving on postage, but then I risk customs killing me.
Idiocy number 2. Mediablasters have just announced the Heian arc V1-3 to be released as a boxset. The RRP is $30, which means that when it is released it will be around £15. It's due in September and is listed to have all the extras, but if I was selling a budget box, I'd leave them out.
It follows that Mediablasters will logically announce a Tokyo arc boxset, which'll probably come a few months after. I could wait and get v4-6 for less than half what I'll end up paying now. Yet I can't wait...
So am I being an idiot? _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

Do you already have the UK discs, or are you watching for the first time? If you're double-dipping, I say definitely wait for the cheap set as you've at least got the option to watch dubbed.
Price isn't too much of an issue if you really want something imo. Otherwise I'd be importing right, left and centre over the more expensive version over here. Not sure how much the postage is so this might sound stupid, but would it be cheaper to order each disc seperately?
I'd say go for it right here right now if it weren't for the ultra-priced post issues. (when do the standards change again? Maybe wait until then?) |

Yeah, I'm double dipping, but I really don't want to watch the dubtitled discs again.
Customs changes in December, which sort of defeats the purpose.
I save £4 on postage if I order them together, but customs will sting me for however much they usually do. The last time it was £7
The thing about Otogi Zoshi was the really cool extras. You had the director round table discussions and the history lectures, around 50 minutes worth to each disc. I dunno how Manga crammed it all onto one disc for volumes 1 & 2, they had to release v3 as a two disc set. They are all two disc sets in the US.
There's also a lot of on screen text that doesn't get translated in the final volume. Hopefully it will in the R1 disc.
See, it sounds like I already made up my mind. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

Im a bit ignorant when it comes to importing, whats this about customs and december? are they bringing in another import tax or something? _________________ Subtitles only!? If I wanted to read I would've bought a book! |

You're being an idiot
Customs fees have gone up there's now an £8 admin fee with royal mail telling you they're charging you, irriguardless fo teh vat on top of that, so unless you're inporoting £70-90 worth of titles it's not worth the risk a the customs fee could end up morethan the half the costfo the item.
Media Blasters also don't take off there extras it's only ADV:US that do that for there thinpacks all otehr companies keep there extras on.
Plus if the heian arc is $30rrp then there will be DVD pacifics discount on top of that probably taking it down to around $20.
wait for the tokyo arc set. _________________ “Sometimes, death is all you can see. It’s all around you. It consumes you - So you have to look it in the eye, and bare your teeth.”

Right now, you can only import £18 worth of stuff before customs hits you. This December that limit goes up to £100-ish
In realistic terms, if I buy now, I'll pay double what I'll pay for the eventual Tokyo set. But a bird in the hand as they say... I'm not getting any younger... Live for the moment, Carpe the diem, and all the other cliches.
I can be an idiot and watch it this summer, or hedge my bets and wait till winter, assuming Media Blasters release the set in due order. (Got to remember that a solicitation isn't the same as a release)...
I've convinced myself enough to place the order for V4. They haven't filled it yet. I've still got time to change my mind. Yeah... I'm an idiot. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

The Tokyo arc is solicited for October 10th. And yeah, I paid more than double in the end, but I don't care.
Incidentally, it turns out that it isn't just ADV that strip extras. Bandai's PlanetES volumes 1-3 in the US were 2-disc sets, with the episodes on one and the extras on the other. I got the collection today, and they left out the extras discs. It makes things a bit weird extras wise, I have audio dramas #6 onwards and not #1-5. I also miss out on some NASA interviews and extras as well as some cast interviews.
No big loss really, as it's pretty much the same as the UK releases in the end. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

Yup... dubs and no extras.
I was impatient, I wanted my discs yesterday, so I wound up paying three times what I could have if I had waited...
But I'm happy.
If you can play Region 1 discs and can wait until mid-October, then the Tokyo Arc comes out in the US, and you can pick it up for a tenner + p&p

It'll be worth waiting till September for the Heian arc to be released to see if they include the extras discs with the sets. They should, but it's best to be certain.
I ought to add that the UK dubs aren't bad. It's just that there is a whole lot of on-screen text in the Tokyo arc, and none of it is translated. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

I can't play region 1. All my DVD's have to be region 2.
Hang on...please tell me they still have a Japanese audio option, even if it is dubtitles...
Man this sucks. |

What DVD player do you use? Pretty much all of them can be hacked to multi-region, just by pushing a few buttons on a remote.
And all Otogi discs in the UK have English & Japanese in 2.0, 5.1 and DTS _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

I use my PC and it only allows me to swap regions 3 times. So I stick to Region 2. It doesn't normally bother me that much - I don't mind sticking solely to supporting the UK industry. But this burns
Mah, guess I'll just have to get over it |

For what it's worth I finished Otogi Zoshi a couple of months ago and even as a subtitle fan I wasn't bothered by the subs on disks 4-6, Tokyo arc.
Of course now you know you may notice it more. I didn't when I watched it and apart from the more obvious bits it was fine. _________________ When people fail at being alive, they die.

There is software out there that will allow you to multi-region a DVD-ROM
http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
I haven't used it myself, but I've read the reviews from a trusted source and it does what it says. It has a 21 day trial period before you have to pay anything.
If you have a TV to watch things on, you ought to just by a cheapo player from a supermarket. Most of those are multi-region out of the box. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."
