Dredging this back up from the depths! 
I got into anime due to a friend, and therefore she's the one I talk about it most with.
I've got...3 of my friends into anime using Inuyasha, FMA and strangely enough Card Captor Sakura (after I challenged him that it was better than Cardcaptors)
My parents don't really mind me watching it, but they probably think it's a phase. They'd never buy me any for Christmas/Birthdays those.
Most of my female friends think it's porn. I've converted most of my male friends. I don't hide it, but nor do I advertise.  |

| I got into anime before I finished school, so now that I don't talk to my old school friends, I only know one person I didn't meet because of anime. That happens to be my best friend who I've known for almost my entire life and I got him into anime. XD |

I was the same, a mate started lending me some decent titles and it reeally got me fired up, then a girl I met at uni helped me carpet bomb some of the other classics.
I don't really try and get my friends into anime, most of them seem to have a fairly positive view of it and realise things like the overfiend are not a complete representation of the huge diversity of anime
I just lend them titles I know they'll enjoy, if they wanna get serious bout anime, I'll be there waiting to lend em all the required viewing
