So with ADV having suffered quite badly from the recent churning of the industry. With the news that E's Otherwise is to go straight to complete series box set, in the light of what EOA found out in their latest podcast, about series that go straight to complete box set being a risky venture, is it good or bad idea? Are ADV holding the nail that will seal their coffin in place to see if a hammer is going to come along?
I'm certainly going to go buy this box set when it comes out, purely to show my support for ADV and wanting more series to go straight to boxset in the UK, but where has it come from?
Is this a license ADV have owned for the UK for a while and are releasing it all off a sudden to make up for their lost titles or is it something newly acquired meaning that ADV are still in the race and have a few more surprises ahead? |

ADV passed E's Otherwise through the BBFC a long time ago, so a big portion of the cost had already been paid. Also they don't exactly have anything else to release now, and they don't believe it would sell well as singles, so the decision to go straight to boxset now, rather than after a couple of volumes was an obvious one. _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

ADV have been sat on E's otherwise for ages, I think they may have announced the UK rights way back when they also said they had stuff like Kaleido star (sp?) and princess yuchi and all sortsof other titles that have never and never will see the light of day here, espetially now the heyday is over with. _________________ ...

What with the current trends in the market and all, do people think two lots of £24.99-29.99 half season sets would be more appealing than a single £49.99 wodge?
Might pick this up at the Expo if I'm feeling good. |

That's exactly what Beez do. They release deluxe sets at £60-80, and half season sets for £30-£40, with it being a decision based on the popularity of the series which they choose.
So you should ask Andrew at Beez how they have sold comparitavly (or if he see's this post, maybe he can answer before expo ) _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

It's not quite the same imo as Beez release singles first, meaning the titles are a known quantity before they go to box sets. I was thinking more along the lines of Manga's box-centric antics... |

Manga are the money bags of the industry, at least in the UK. And of course they have the name factor. _________________ Avatar: Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore

4 episode volumes= BAD, im not getting any younger here!
chunky volumes (12+ eps) = BETTER
Half season boxsets = ok if you think you'll like it,
BOXSET = You really need to like it, good for if you've already seen it on tv or the net. _________________ "Lie back and think of England" |

I was taking your comment about boxes being about "post-singles" releases. Straight-to-box on regular releases just isn't financially viable in such a small market. E's Otherwise looks to be an exception rather than the rule. ADV want to make use of the money they've already spent, to at least make something back. _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

Well in particular to E's Otherwise, Amazon have it down as £35 which for a full series I'd be willing to take a chance on, where as for £50 I'd be more hesitant buying a series I know little about. Looking at Amazon the region box set of E's Otherwise is going for about £20 which if you got hit by customs you'd likely to be paying around £35 anyway. |

To be honest and its probably only due to the fact that I am playing catch up but I preer to get the box sets and so it is preerable to me if they were put straight out in a set.
I only get the single volumes if they are they are older and thereby cheaper cumulatively! |

I like multi-episode releases like Tactics was, and like OHSHC and Ghost Hunt will be.
13 episode sets are great, because they're affordable enough that you don't feel like you're pouring money away, yet if you don't like it, you haven't lost too much.
Imo anyway |

| Boxsets for me, but I do like to get the 1st vol to see if I like it, if it can't be watched legally on the net. |
