Just an oddity over at MVM's online shop, Anime on Line where they have shifted out all of the FUNimation titles out of their own library and have added a FUNimation label. I think this is a fairly recent occurrence and wonder if it points to an official agreement that MVM have become FUNimation's official UK distributor rather than the "close partnership" they appear to have had in the past.

Probably nothing but it got me thinking a little...

it does look interesting. If Funimation enter into an agreement with MVM, it looks good for the future, snce Funimation is arguably the main player in the US anime market (along with ADV and Geneon)

If you look on the back of, say, a FMA dvd case, MVM are just mentioned as distributor.

isn't this funimation-MVM thing more to do with Madman's agreement with Funimation? I always got the impression whatever madman mastered MVM would take so thats going to be the ultimate deciding factor.

It has nothing to do with Madman since they also distribute most of ADV's (US) catalogue in Australia too and also work with other UK distributors (such as Manga and Optimum) with PAL conversions and mastering. Madman are responsible for about 90% of anime distribution in Australia, which clearly isn't the case for MVM in the UK.

The only reason that there is a correlation between Madman licencing a title being a spur for MVM is that Madman handle the PAL conversion and master the DVDs (sometimes part-funded by MVM as I understand it).

MVM also have reasonably good relationships with AnimEigo and Geneon US but not quite so close as it is with FUNimation.

There are almost definitely things afoot between MVM and FUNimation. I recently received an order from Anime-on-line (MVM's online shop) with a packing not that marked Fullmetal Alchemist volume 9 as withdrawn. This suggests they will not be releasing it rather than that it has been delayed, which is strange for a title that has been, by all accounts, a strong seller...

Interesting...

Bear in mind, however, that Fullmetal Alchemist 8 was delayed too. It could just be the knock-on from that delay.

There is also the other option, where Funimation decide to enter the UK market as a fifth major player (ADV, MVM, Manga, Beez, Funi)

Yeah, this is what im hoping.

Of course, with FUNis new owners, they have enough spare cash to set up a UK office.

I have it on good authority that FUNi aren't setting up shop in the UK, although that could have been a sidestep from my inquiry but I doubt that very much. I believe there is more to come soon but I am not sure what just yet...

I was a little shocked when I was talking with Ross (from UKA) about this over the weekend. The signs have been looking... odd for a long while and I didn't want to believe this is where it would end up... Sad.

hmm, the sidestep option is looking more likely, someone at the Anime UK News forums emailed them:

Thank you for the email. FUNimation is not pulling out of the UK. I
can't provide more information than that. Expect an announcement within
the next couple of weeks.

Thanks again!
