Sounds like Shinji Aramaki (bubblegum cirisis production designer) is back as director! 
Just did a quick wiki and it sounds like (could be rumour) that there might be a 26 episode 2D series in the pipeline Shirow must be making a fortune!

I see what you mean about the toon shading being in decline, hopefully the look will be a bit more polished
John Woo is producer aparently so expect lots of doves flying out of nowhere! hopefully Mr Aramaki will keep him in check
I really hope this time around they get a proper orchestra to do the score, the tunes were great but you could so tell that the orchestral stuff was done on a synthesiser!

If you hadn't said that I might have guessed from watching the trailer, I do note it says "ps2" on the youtube title.
And why oh why does it have to be called "ex machina" it's such a cleche, even Angelic Layer managed a volume title of "deus ex machina".
No matter how good applessed gets it will always be GitS:SAC's little lesser brother.

Now that's interesting, because Shirow always considers Appleseed to be his crowning achievment not suprising since theres about 4 200/300 page books - and he still says it's unfinished!
I guess it's early days yet as to wether this is from the game or the film, either way theres some more appleseed on the way

As far as manga goes I'd agree with you, but anime appleseed gets teh raw deal, teh last movie was good but nothing overly special.
