A new press release has confirmed the first HD DVD release of an anime title in the US this afternoon. Bandai Visual (USA and Japan) will be launching the first Freedom OVA on 06/26/2007. The release, which will be an HD DVD/DVD combo disc, will retail for $39.99. The first of six OVA releases, it will contain the Japanese language track with English subtitles and the special prologue to the series.

From the front page of animeondvd.com.

$39.99 for a single epsiode (albelt hidef) and monolingual? It wont sell very well imo.

What annoys me most is BV have made it clear they dont want to do dubs anymore - Gunbuster 2 isnt getting one (fair enough, the first one couldnt so i dont think anyone expected one) nor is Wings of Rean. A very troubleing devlopment, considering that BV have got at least one show thats been released dubbed by someone else (they have one of the Galaxy Angel series, the others have been released by Bandai with dub by Ocean in Canada).

In fact, someone on AoD emailed them about it and that arcording to market research, fans dont want dubs..... Right....

Oops, this kinda went from a news post to a rant, didnt it?

Ah, that old arguement paying attention to the vocal community means nothing again, eh? Twisted Evil

Back in the days of VHS, dubs vids always outsold the subs. Being sub-only can cut off the appeal to the fabled 'casual fan' (of which there are more than there are hardcore fans imo).

It's tough one to call in all honesty. Apparently Cardcaptor Sakura (subbed, uncut) outsold Cardcaptors (dubbed, edited) when it came out on DVD, but then Manga seemed pretty happy with their UK-exclusive dubs of Innocence and Millenium Actress though.

I've no idea who's right really. Perhaps the US market is very different from us in the UK?

Thats probably due to the fact that Cardcaptors is a real hack job, lol Wink

From what i heard dub outsold sub back in the VHS days.

I just think BV are listenning to the wrong people, they should have a quiet word with there "brothers" at Bandai Entertainment.

Or at least lower the damn price, i know its HD DVD and all but that doesnt really explain it.

One of the reasons that dubs outsold subs back then was that there was always a price markup on subtitled versions. Possibly that was a response to the lower sales or it could be the cause of the lower sales itself.

It does sound a bit of an odd stance to say but given a lot of the criticsm that Bandai have come in for on some of their dubs I can kind of understand where they are coming from. The problem there doesn't stem from dubbing itself but the perceived (lack of) quality of the dub. I am an original language watcher myself but I do see the draw that a dub provides to the wider audience and how a sub only release is liable to alienate the majority of viewers. Regardless of my own watching habits I still would like the option presented, especially in this world of a hybrid-capable format in the DVD.

Its the price that got me more really, if something doesnt have two languages people normally expect it to be a bit less, not more. This release has the exuse of "its HD DVD" but there other sub only title (Wings of Rean) doesnt.

Oh and BTW, this isnt that Bandai, its the Japanese diviosn that set up a US division for some reason, hence "they should have a quiet word with there "brothers" at Bandai Entertainment. " Smile

Their releases are good, but I stick with my "unpredictable" tag Razz
btw, is anyone keeping a tally for the total cumulative delay for My-HiME (and other Beez titles) so far?

I'm on the verge of stopping adding them to EoA's release dates list, as they slip so much we've got volumes ahead of where releases are upto due next week.

say like vol6 out 26/03 but volume 5 still isn't out. How are you supposed to keep track of that?

I wasn't talking any particular series but I presume you mean My Hime? as I've completely lost track. random example.

Yeah, when I emailed Andrew about the problems with vol4, I asked him about volumes 5 & 6 while at it.

Wings of Honneamise US Release (08:51 AM EDT): Another detail has emerged in the Watch Impress article posted earlier this morning; Wings of Honneamise is also getting a US HD-DVD release in August with a price of $79.99.

er, ouch.

No news on any extras or if its getting dubbed (or the pre-existing dub will be included) but id expect something big to make up for the price.

Isn't that similar a similar pricepoint to the other Honneamise (the Bandai company, not the anime itself; this could be a bit confusing) releases. They are, after all, around to provide high quality, collectible relases for the western market.
