I have been having this problem for a while and wonderd if aniyone else has the same prob.
the one that gets me is when you friends refer to your anime a kids cartoon or stuff. I use to get a bit grumpy but have just dicided that there's no point in saying anything to people how genarely have not watched much other than what they saw when there where longer.

I don't rub it in their faces that I'm into anime, so they generally lay off and respect the fact i like it.
If people to start up about it then the words 'Spirited', 'Oscar' and 'Away' normally gives them something to think about.
I've got a bunch of other reasons/excuses which I've used at times as well, but they border on being obnoxious which I use for people irritate me and are particularly rude about it. |

I don't have that many friends not into anime, or at the least not into animation so all of 'em can appretiate anime as animation if nothing else. I did have a lecturer at Uni (studied aniamtion) who hated anime and thought it was rubbish, at first we'd argue but eventually I gave up and ignored him.
I am aware of wearing anime t-shirts nowadays, the sort with azumanga gals on the back or half nekked girls on the front as I'm aware of the connotation. I'm also know from another forum of the series Strawberry Mashmallow being acused of being pedeophile fodder.
A sad state for anime fans in a world of non anime fans. _________________ ...

Next time someone has a go at your anime fandom try one of the following conversations.
anime fan - “Yeah, I watch anime, it’s pretty cool.”
judgmental non-fan - “Man, you’re a wuss. I can’t believe you watch Pokemon and stuff.”
anime fan - “Hey, hey, don’t diss the Pokemon. That show is friggin’ awesome.”
judgmental non-fan - “Are you serious??”
anime fan - “Dude, they’re like the X-men of the animal world. You just don’t know.”
Another example:
judgmental non-fan - “You sick pervert; I bet you spend all your time watching those nasty porno cartoons!”
anime fan - “Yeah, all the time. I have like, WALLS of it back home.”
judgmental non-fan - “I bet you even watch that nasty poop-eating porn.”
anime fan - “EVERYDAY. There’s this one where this chick craps in a bowl and mixes it with her Cheerios. It’s so hot.”
judgmental non-fan - “… are you serious?”
anime fan - “No.”
Credit must go out to animenewsnetwork which is where i origninally read them. _________________ ...

it really annoys me when people take an interest, say they will come to an anime showing, then never bother :S
the worst things people have said to me are:
-I don't watch ridiculous, idiotic things for children.
-Oh that's all cute stuff and I HATE cute stuff (this was a girly girl, i was confused)
-but you'll 'grow' out of it.
-i don't mind anime but i'm not watching it with a bunch of weirdos (this was when I was Pres of the anime soc at my Uni, I wanted to hurt him!)
i'm not really friends with anyone who doesn't like anime! I'm fairly reclusive anyway I guess, even more this year with it being my final year. I'm writing my 10,000 word essay on manga art if I can get my Japanese Art lecturer to give me permission next week. Woo! ^_^ |

Isnt that just a super cute slice of life anime/manga?

Id probably say something like "So is The Simpsons just a cartoon? South Park just a cartoon? etc just a cartoon?"
You get the idea.
My dad thinks its weird, lol, but he doesnt mind it. At firsst he thought the usual Brit view on it (thank you tabloids ) but after i shown him a few things he changed his tune.
My mum really enjoyed the Studio Ghibli season on Film4 - which surprised me. Plus i managed to get her to watch Howl's Moving Castle (which my dad liked) and Blue Sky. _________________ Avatar: Seras Victoria from Hellsing: Ultimate

I deal with criticism against anime by non-anime fans by calculatingly planning their addiction. I'll listen to them and find something that fits their taste, then I'll let them borrow a dvd after talking about cool films, long after they have forgotten their anime slating conversation.
So the action movie fan I'd suggest Ninja Scroll or Fist of the North Star, because if they haven't seen them I know they'll get a kick from them.
If you try it this way you'll find its easier to addict people without trying too hard. _________________ Seek joy in life, cause less strife and hopefully you'll find a pretty wife. LOL! |

Paraphrasing someone from somewhere, Terry Pratchet maybe, when asked about the image of fantasy fans:
| Quote: |
Football fan goes home to his bedroom where he has Manchester United wallpaper, has a drink from his Manchester United mug, puts on his £80 new this season replica Manchester United shirt, watches Match Of The Day, goes to bed in his Manchester United pyjamas under his Manchester United duvet and rests his head on his Manchester United pillow, turns off his Manchester United bedside lamp and thinks about spending £1000 for his Manchester United season ticket and goes to sleep to dream about.... Manchester United.
And they call us sad. |
On topic most of my friends like anime or are at least not hostile. |

Yeah I try to do this with my mates, I don't try to overwhelm em with the required viewing but if I think theres a title I know they'll like I'm more than happy to lend it to them _________________ Subtitles only!? If I wanted to read I would've bought a book! |

I don't really have a problem with what people think, largely because I don't care. I've been confronted by things like "isn't that just cartoon porn?" and such and if I feel belligerent I'll defend it with a polar opposite such as "you mean like Pokemon?" or some such.
I always find the best way to win an argument is to counter with a question that makes the other part think about what they are saying. Telling somebody something isn't true doesn't really assert anything but if they stop and think about it then they will come to see the truth for themselves. Most people give up on me fairly quickly because they know they won't win because I am stubborn or realise I just don't give a damn what they think.
On the other hand, most of the people I know have some understanding of the medium even if they aren't anime fans per se. They are always willing to dabble in some anime, such as the colleague who was going on about how his friend had just watched Akira and was raving about it, so I lent him Akira to see for himself. |

I always get people saying oh look Dans watching animated porn again and it really gets on my nerves, just because the stuff i watch is 15 and over they instantly assume it is porn. _________________ The

| I don't usually tell people that I watch anime or read manga mainly because I know they are not open to it. My sister is and her boyfriend and my mum does not mind that I watch anime |
