Yeah the whole Bob thing's a bit dodgy in terms of how a foreign character's considered in Tenjho Tenge. You can read into it further on the awful assumption that all black people like their music and therefore the only choice of fighting style must be Capoeira. Not cool...
Aside from his poor setup, it's nice that his role is taken as seriously as everyone else in there - even to the point of him having a Japanese girlfriend (which is apparently is a big no-no in the eyes of older Japanese).
But yeah Bob's a bad choice of name.  |

The thing that baffles me the most with all these names is why they do it! I mean some names you can't tell that they're going to sound stupid until it's too late...but Goat Hoary? I'll admit to doing a double take when I first heard it!   |

To Japanese ears anything foreign-sounding sounds more interesting and exotic. The same applies to us - give it a Japanese name instead of something like Matilda and suddenly it sounds a lot cooler.
Must be why sub fans are so into some shows - it can make a naff show seem all the more better due to a show being show 'as originally intended'.

Not anime but manga, Mamotte Lolipop, the charaters are all named after numbers, which is both lazy and genius at the same time.
Oh,
I've also got a theory I want to test, have holes poked in. It seems a high percentage of males in harem anime have names startign with "K" anybody else noticed this?

Oh, I felt that dig.
I always watch subs. Mainly because I find the dubs in most cases cringe-worthy to listen to.
It does make it more 'cool' to listen to though *mocks self*
However, I shall defend my sub-watching to the end! Down with dubs! *prepares to be attacked on all fronts* |

For that matter, what about Project A-Ko. The three main characters are named A-Ko, B-Ko and C-Ko, literally Child A, Child B and Child C if translated. Of course the whole point of them is to be generic since the whole thing is a parody. |

I'll attack if you really want, but I wouldn't do that to a fellow sub fan.
It is funny seeing Hollywood from the other perspective. They have really dumb names for non-Western characters.
In Star Trek II, the villain was Khan Noonien Singh, supposedly a Sikh. The Singh is a Sikh name but in the wrong place (should be the middle name). Khan is an Islamic name/Mongol title, while Noonien is the name of a Korean soldier that Gene Roddenberry knew.
Then there is the Indian guy in Van Wilder, Taj Mahal Badalandabad.
That's like naming your kid Albert Memorial Bigdickcity!

I think a lot of non-western names in films aren't really thought about. They just want something exotic and foreign sounding. I guess it just makes the people who do think about it so much better! |

What do you find so cringe worthy about dubs? And what english language dubs have you watched to to get that impression? I'd be happy to suggest some series with very high quality voice acting, to see if you would change your opinion regarding the quality of voice acting, regardless of your preference for the Japanese language with subtitles option.

Lol, you've got the l337 on your side so I shouldn't worry. 
It's harder ofr foreigners to identify bad acting in Japanese so it can help things out sometimes. I'm too lazy to go for subs myself, but then again I don't turn my nose up to them either. Both are fine by me.

Yeah how could those three not have been mentioned until this point, and don;t forget the character "D" in Project A-Ko.
The manga Free Collars Kingdom also has two supports named A-Ko and I-ko.
