Wow, a whole part of the board I haven't been in before.

Frankly I don't have the time, the inclinination, or more importantly the money for manga. Which is why I usually sneak a glimpse at my local library just in case.

But up till now, no luck. I did manage to find Shaolin Soccer once and another Chinese comic book I can't recall, and since there is a small Japanese expat community near where I live, there is a Japanese literature shelf in one library that I know of. No manga though, or rather no manga that we would be familiar with. Not being able to read kanji is one problem, but they did have a dual language manga adaptation of Tales of Genji that I fell asleep to three nights in a row. I guess I'm not a sucker for the classics.

But, last week I did strike it *lucky*...

Yup, my local library has finally got a (one) volume of manga, translated into English and of a property we would be familiar with. My first manga turns out to be...

Dragonball Volume 9.

All in all an underwhelming experience that finished too quickly. Content aside, my big problem with this manga, as it has been with all the graphic novels/comic books that I have read, is that the experience is over too quickly.

And there is something to be said for cel shading/musical accompaniment and voice acting.

Or maybe I started off with the wrong manga... Embarassed

I've only read the first 4 volumes of Dragonball. I find it fun, but the style of humour is a bit crude (I think it helps give it a bit of charm myself). There's certainly better manga out there. I normally whip through a volume in under an hour easy - it's just how comics work.

Your library sounds a little starved of manga. It's not too bad where I live. It's kept in the teen section which kind of sucks as I feel a little uncomfortable browsing in that section (people probably think I'm a poor reader or a pervert or something). Some random titles are thrown in fiction, horror and sci-fi, but it depends on who's been arranging the shelves.

I think if you put in a request with the library they can order stuff for you, though I've never tried that myself.

Oh and Kodansha's dual langage manga are pretty obscure these days. If they had one, they might have more (maybe) which would be worth investigating. They did about 5 titles including Cardcaptor Sakura, Kindaichi Case Files and Sazae-san, but I recommend Survival in the Office if they've got it. It's a cute little 4-panel gag manga:

w00t! to use the current vernacular...

My library finally caved and got a Manga shelf.

Of course I find it a month late, so all that is left are the dregs. The librarians seemed surprised that it's so popular!

But of the sixteen or so titles that were still there, I managed to snag...

Chobits V 2, 3, & 7
GTO V 8
Fruits Basket V 2
XXXHolic V 1
Magical Miracle V1
Gothic Sports V1

Only allowed 8 books on one ticket Crying or Very sad

Had to leave some Get Backers, Saiyuki, Boy Princess, Pet Shop Of Horrors, Paradise Kiss, Gundam, and Eerie Queerie behind.

Looks like I have

Fushigi Yugi
Oh My Goddess
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Bleach
Samurai Girl Real Bout High School
RG Veda
Trash
Immortal Rain
King Of Hell
Ai Yori Aoshi
Archlord
Princess Ai
kare Kano
Rave Master
Shrine Of The Morning Mist
Death Note
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Flame Of Recca
Absolute Boyfriend
Othello

to look forward to when they are returned. It's about 100 volumes in total.

Unfortunately there aren't too many complete series. There's about 20 volumes of Fushigi Yugi, 7 of Tsubasa and Flame of Recca, but otherwise just some random sampling of various titles, or just a couple of volume 1s

Still, it's a great way to sample.

And my library has finally got manga Very Happy

That mess, which I can't get to work as a direct link (I've split it onto separate lines to avoid page stretching, but it is all one line) leads to a catalogue listing. So if you are in the Greenwich area and have a manga craving... Wink

Looks like you picked up a better range this time round. Smile

If they've got it I'd recommend nabbing Paradise Kiss at the soonest opportunity!

It's mean spirited of me to whine, but I wish they had some Love Hina or Negima, so I can get to the bottom of the 'better than the anime' statements.

Actually I had a moment of 'been watching too much anime' absurdity while reading a sample chapter today.

I could have sworn that the book was dubbed, and that the panels should have had the original kanji in the speech bubbles, with 'translated subtitles' at the bottom of the panels. Laughing
