I can't remember who it was (I think Mark X. Laskowski) but someone on the AoD forums mentioned an interesting bit of information about the copywrite problem. Percentages may not be fully accurate, but the general feeling is there.
If you were to take the entire US movie/tv/dvd market and put it on a pie chart, anime would cover less than 3%, a tiny slice. However, if you were to make the same pie chart but instead, replace the size, with the "size of illegal download community", anime would jump to a 50% slice. _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

I started out with anime properly when Akira was shown on BBC2 and found out more by buying magazines and buying titles based on advertising and cover artwork (something which I still do).
The 'try before you buy' thing with downloading fansubs is something which hasn't particularly gelled with me. If you want it, buy it. If you don't then leave it on the shelf. If you're not sure then wait until it's cheap and just take the risk.
Downloading fansubs is lazy and a little but spoilt (imo, of course). The online community will take everything it can but isn't happy to give anything in return. |
