To coincide with a series of final volume reviews I thought I'd start up a thread for discussing that most controversial and enigmatic part of a show - the ending hell some shows don't even have them.

the reviews start with Ergo proxy volume 6

But what are your favorites, the worst ones the ones that make you go "huh" or "WTF" have they ruined or made a show for you????

The one that has really got my goat in recent weeks, which I sense is coming up, is Trinity Blood. Not that the show really ever rang my bells, but I felt it squandered what little promise it had on an utter mess of an ending.

Then there is Legend of the Four Kings, which goes all Bobby Ewing with its ending. Yuk.

Two words for that: Cop out! Evil or Very Mad

Would it help the thread if we banned Evangelion from it? Let's talk about other shows... like Abenobashi. Twisted Evil

I personally think Abenobashi was fine. It ended up exactly where it was going as far as I was concerned.

Probably one of my least favourite endings is probably Fruits Basket but that is mostly because they ended it. There is a whole lot more to go on with after the point at which they ended but never got around to doing it. With the manga run finished up in Japan the likelihood is that the anime will never reach the full conclusion Sad. The same goes for Negima!. The series was, overall, too short and rushed through the Kyoto arc and completely ignored the festival arc in a rush to come to an ending. The series was fun but I would have preferred the creators to take a little more time and realise it in a slightly better fashion.

yes, lets talk about another gainnax show that has a sh*te ending, ad it to the list of mahoromatic Season1, Kare kano, Eva, even FLCL has a bit of a tangent to end it.

The phrase "cop out" can be used to describe so many shows.

I otfen wonder if the endings of anime are so ambiguous sometiems not lonly because the manga is still ongoing but also to fuel the doujin industry that is tied so closly to it, if a difinitive endign was given then how would anybody write any more?

Another side of the ambiguous endings in anime has, for me at least, been very much part of the style of anime storytelling. There is often a sense of a chapter ending but life still going on afterwards.

The problem is where it doesn't properly end any of the arcs that it started. As I think of that I am reminded of Spiral. I wasn't too enamoured of the story as it progressed through it to begin with. It opened a whole slew of threads and by then end had not managed to close a single one of them. It didnt't manage to answer any one of the questions that most needed addressing and that could have saved the show from being mediocre (at best).

There are far too many shows out there that don't cover their source material completely, which basically mean they turn into glorified adverts of their respective manga... Peacemaker and RG Veda come to mind.
