Quote:
TheBookseller.com, a website which covers the publishing market in the United Kingdom, reports that Tokyopop UK plans to begin cutting output after its parent company's recent decision to significantly downsize its North American manga publishing activities. Currently, Tokyopop UK releases about 25 titles a month, and plans to decrease that to about 20.

According to Andrew Whelan, the newly hired marketing and sales manager of Tokyopop UK, while overall sales of graphic novels in the country rose over 40% during the first four months of year, sales of Tokyopop's books actually dropped about 4%. Previously, Tokyopop had held 80-90% of the British market for graphic novels; it now only holds about a 50% share. Whelan's predecessor, Dennis McGuirk, recently left his position after four years.

Tokyopop US's problems added to the impact of Viz's offensive on the UK market seem to have left their mark.

Considering that the UK releases are all on catch-up anyway I don't think this will affect the local Waterstones etc. too much.

Ganbatte Tokyopop!

In terms of US production it's been said (on animeonedvd forums) that Fruits Basket, Rave Master, Saiyuki and Tactics will NOT be cancelled. Some of their novels have been cut but aside from that it's all a bit up in the air.

Apparently a couple do ok (especially .hack from what I gather), but yeah a lot of it never really got anywhere.

Maybe they'll just reduce their output same as the manga instead of killing the whole thing off.

reducing books from 25 to 20 isn't that big of a deal, honestly how many do people buy, it will likly have little impact on what titles one is buying asside from maybe going from monthly to bi-monthly.

then there's even the ammount of books a bookstore can stock at any one time, they can't possibly stock a least +25 per month each month.

supply and demand, and it seems supply is maybe stripping demand.

I'm not surprised to hear that the UK manga market has grown, but Tokyopop has shrunk here. Previously, Tokyopop was the only real player in the field, now we have the other players making their moves over here too. Tokyopop's scattergun approach isn't going to work any more.
