But not all of it...

ADV's woes continue...

http://animecornerstore.blogspot.com/2008/07/some-adv-new-releases-now-suspended.html

and it looks like ADV have lost a wodge load of licences. Whether temporary or permanent remains to be seen, but II'd guess that Welcome to the NHK in the UK is in the air.

But the Good News!

http://www.animeondvd.com/news/pr.php?pr_view=1436

Funimation now have the rights to distrbute Geneon product. They'll be starting with Hellsing Ultimate, and 2nd Barrage and Shana are confirmed too. As is pretty much everything else that Geneon had on their books.

It may be that Funimation end up in the US the same as Madman in Australia...

Sounds like yet more licensing problems for ADV... didn't that happen earlier in the year as well?

I don't think the Geneon/FUNi deal will affect anywhere aside from the US.

the Funimation news is like somebody walking up to me and giving me money. It's a big surprise but it's more than welcome. I finally get to hear Cristina Vee as nanoha, and it's an understatement to say that I'm happy right now.

Really interested in checking out Paradise Kiss. Fingers crossed that if Funi do a proper re-release there may be a (slim) chance for it to come to the UK...

It only applies to the US - no effect for elsewhere.

From the press release -
".... announced today their partnership to distribute select DVD titles in North America. "

Smile

'sides, if FUNimation took over international releases of these I think Madman and MVM would be very, very pissed off with Geneon for breaking contracts.

They have been available to the UK (or anywhere else that wants them) for a long time as far as I was aware, much like with Black Lagoon: TSB. Geneon did not completely shut up shop; they simply ceased direct distribution and were looking for a partner to help in that respect.

Still, with this news I am most happy that end of Rozen Maiden may finally see the light of day Smile.

Add me to the list of fans happy to see some geneon titles voming back on the books, I think I might end up buying more of them that I would have done.

I'll keep crying though until When They Cry hits the shops.

The ADV news is well ADV, it is gettign a bit Off now to keep hereing there's no trouble on the one hand and have events liek this on the other.

Ironically both in the same thread the moral of the story comes down to

"if you're an anime distributor - don't get involved with japanese moeny."

Geneon + Dentsu = collapsed last year
ADV + Sojitz = fate unkown

Most industries have periods of consolidation from time to time when companies merge or fold. It's sort of a business equivalent of Darwinian Evolution Theory where the weaker companies, for whatever reason, find themselves unable to survive in the market.

With the worldwide recession making trading difficult it's no surprise that those companies with business models unable to cope with the downturn start to struggle.

We just have to hope that when the dust settles the survivors will be stronger and able to continue distributing good quality anime over here.

There will be a knock on effect in the UK simply because the UK market follows the US, and the shows that are released here usually depend on how well they do in America.

If Geneon discs just aren't being released, then it becomes more of a risk as to which ones will be successful and which ones won't.

But more importantly, Geneon are still in the licencing and producing game. With any luck, this deal with Funimation isn't just a one off thing, and eventually we'll see some new titles coming through. Again that will eventually trickle through to the UK.
