I heard about these and more of them seem to be popping up on release lists. Whether Vampire Hunter D, Twelve Kingdoms or Oh My Goddess, manga novels I haven't purchased or read myself, but the idea seems to go against actually manga than promote it (fair enough, they could do the opposite and I could be wrong here), correct me if my view is rose tinted and misty.
So are manga novels a good, justified way to expand on a proper manga/anime series, potential bringing new readers and content, or will they get in the way of the manga status quo (even more so in consideration, when the market is flooded with too many manga titles)? Do you intend to read/purchase any of them or not? _________________ Seek joy in life, cause less strife and hopefully you'll find a pretty wife. LOL! |

Dunno it depends on who's written them I guess. It's the same over here with the various Halo, Dr.Who and Warhammer 40,000 novelisations - it's a cash in. They are good for expanding internal characterisation, but not as good for the action - I wonder a little just how good the Naruto or Basilisk novels read...
With Vampire Hunter D though, it was originally a book - so in that case I don't have a problem having it over here. It has the same relevence as reading The Ring novel (which then inspired the film). Same with Dirty Pair which were Sci-fi novels first and foremost before the bandwagon came with TV series and all that.
I'd imagine they vary in quality, but I'd say not really worth going for unless you're already a fan of a particular series. (Or again unless it's the original version of the work in which case it should take precedence over its spin-offs) |
