An odd one to phrase this, how do you view your anime, yes obviously sat in front of a telly, but what do you take away from it when you’re done, do you like a good plot, characterisation, mood, an “X factor” or something more superficial.
The prevailing memory for me after watching a show is the mood, that impossibly hard to define quality that makes me go that was so cool. I rarely remember plot points which makes re-watches such a joy, I also rarely notice character development unless it’s really obvious at the time.
It’s funny as it can make talking about anime to others really hard. _________________ ...

To me the options about the plot and the characters are one and the same, but that's just how I read it.
It depends on the anime. I watch different shows for different reasons, but as a general rule of thumb you can't go wrong with some nice healthy explosions! |

Same for me.
I like a good story and good characters which is why I like the Ghibli's I think and the more unusual types such as Lain.
I also tend to prefer female leads as they generally have stronger characterisation than male or maybe it's just that most anime in the UK is female based. Not for fanservice reasons although it's always nice to have something appealing to look at |

It's part story, but mostly characterisation for me. _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

Drawings that come to life
that's what I love about anime
The prettier the better but it's still got to have a point _________________ Subtitles only!? If I wanted to read I would've bought a book! |

Definitely the characters for me and that goes for more than just anime. I am firmly of the belief that a good story follows from use of sympathetic characters. That is not to say they have to necessarily be likeable but they must have traits with which you can at least identify and accept.
The books and anime I have enjoyed least has always been those with poor characters. Poor characters in this case could be poorly defined, shallow characters or simply weak, wishy-washy characters. The characters were the main reason that I vehemently detested Evangelion. |

I was going to say story and characters first and foremost, but then realised that most of my favourite anime have thin stories and cliched characters.
So it's definitely that indefinable mood of a show. Why else would I love Burst Angel? _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

Loving this post!
I like Evangelion a lot, one of my favourites. But that said I do identify with a lot of the characters (especailly Shinji - I must be a right old scumbag!). There wasn't really a good/bad guy in the whole show, more a bunch of imperfect people who got left in the shit as it were. |

Conversely I found myself wanting to go on a homicidal spree through Nerv headquarters. I was definitely on the angel's side and could quite happily sympathise with them .
A simple case of different strokes and all that . |
