saw this yesterday at the Cornerhouse Cinema in Manchaester (last day it was on too)
I wasn't overly impressed, it's not Ghibli's best by a long way. It didn't have that childhood magic that many of the early ghibli movies have, call me a puritan but I think basing it off of a (western) novel and not an original concept is what's killing it more than anything else. Following on from Howl's anotehr one based on a novel and anotehr not as well recived as otehr previois (earlier) ghibli films dare I say ghibli are loosing their edge, at least in the sense of loosing originality and japanese quaintness. I even thought of Disney.
The story was okay but overly confusing some plot points came out of nowhere, where as there were others covered at the beginning liek the world being in turmoil which then were never mentioned again.
Perhaps a little lad (about 10-11) who came out of the screening before mine summed it up talking to his dad "at least it was better than Laputa Castle in the Sky which was the worst"
made me laugh but I disagree. _________________ ...

Is the Tales of Earthsea film based on the books by Ursula le Guin? I've always wondered, just never got round to finding out.
I've always associated Howl's Moving Castle with the Dianne Wynne-Jones book as well...
Both of them are on my to-watch list though *rubs hands together* I haven't seen nearly enough Studio Ghibli stuff. |

Yes it is based upon the books by Ursula le Guin and Howl's Moving Castle is also based upon the book by Dianne Wynne-Jones (although fairly loosely; it has all the characters but the plot is quite different). |

Hmm, I'd be interested to watch them both just to see what they've changed.
I always wanted them to make a film of Tales of Earthsea when I was younger...*reminisces* |

Sci-fi made a live action version a few years back, which wasn't particularly popular. |

Wow, I really do miss things.
Not that I'd have been able to watch it anyway, I only have four channels and there's not a chance of any of them doing anime or much sci-fi. Grrr. |

I am sure that Earthsea showed on Channel 4 a couple of years back. |

Now I feel even more ashamed
I guess one day I'll actually start watching TV rather than sticking to DVDs! |

X Factor... *shakes head sadly* Is that the one with the singing, or the dancing, or both?
DVD's are definitely better though *strokes collection lovingly* |

I have no idea why I watched it instead of DVDs so don't ask me why... |
