Well you guys are already members so it wont effect any of you, but one possible way to stop bots/spammers is to switch account activation from email to admin

remember when you all joined you had to recieve an email and follo wthe link before you could post on the forum. Well the other way is for us to switch account activation to "Admin" meaning when a new members joins they can't post until we "those in admin positions" activate their account.

bare in mind account activation by admin is currently untested.

What are your thought on us doing this for future new members, as the downside is I see it putting off some members from joining, might make eyeonanime seem more "L33T" or something. It wont stop spammers as once we activate the account they can post, but posting will mean an instant ban via IP address if it were spam.

It would be nice to espesially hear from the newer members would you have joined if you couldn't active your account yourself?

Just got rid of another one (p0rn p0st that is), I'm inclined to switch account activation to admin now, if no one has any problems I'll do that tomorow at somepoint.

*basically leaving time for objections. Very Happy

If you do this, you'll nedd to make it clear for newcomers as to how they can join up. Maybe a faq forum or a sticky thread?

With Damo's proposal (as I understand it) new accounts will not be activated until he or another of the admins authorises it personally. With the added human element it would be much harder to actually get through and post anything. It will not, however, stop bots from creating accounts in the first instance and possibly (I am not sure how much restriction is placed upon unactivated accounts; I'm sure it varies from board to board and setup to setup) add web links to their sites as part of their profile.

That's basically what the automated bots do, they join up and fill in all the profile fields, the givaway is that there account remians inactive (there's anactive/inactive check box in admin for each user) automated bots can't recieve email so can't active there account.
Spammers can and they are the ones who've been posting, an inactive account basically means you can't post.

I'm starting to think that maybe this idea would be worth a try then at least we wouldn't have to be deleting dodgy posts.
