As there's a debate in the '..watching..' thread it seemed sensible to start a topic to discuss anime soundtracks, composers, and performers.
Who do you like? Which series? Which don't you like? What do you own? etc.
Starting things off I own the following:
Singles:
Coppelia no Hitsugi - Noir - Opening theme - Yuki Kajiura/Ali Project
Coppelia no Hitsugi - Noir - Opening theme - Yuki Kajiura/Ali Project remix
Duvet - Serial Experiments Lain - Opening theme - BoA
All The Way - Kino's Journey - Opening theme - Mikuni Shimokawa
The Beautiful World - Kino's Journey - Closing theme - Ai Maeda
Hitomi no Kakera - Madlax - Opening theme - Yuki Kajiura/Fiction Junction YUUKA
Inside Your Heart - Madlax closing theme - Yuki Kajiura/Fiction Junction YUUKA
Albums
Blanc dans Noir - various/cast
Noir OST1 - Yuki Kajiura
Noir OST2 - Yuki Kajiura
Fiction - Yuki Kajiura
Chrno Crusade OST1
Chrno Crusade OST2
Denno Coil OST
Madlax OST1 - Yuki Kajiura
Madlax OST2 - Yuki Kajiura
Ghibli OSTs
Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind
Laputa Castle In The Sky
My Neighbour Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Only Yesterday
Porco Rosso
Whisper Of The Heart
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Cat Returns
Howl's Moving Castle
Studio Ghibli Songs - compilation
I have a lot of Yuki Kajiura which I put down to my love of Noir. I was out of work for a while in 2004 and went 'full otaku' on this series to the point of addiction helped in no small way by the music. Some of it is over used, such as the watch theme, but the opening bars of Canta Per Me and Salva Nos still give me shivers.
My other obsession has to be Ghibli as you can see from the number of OSTs I have from them.
All of my CDs are Japanese originals, with the possible exception of Princess Mononoke, which wasn't available on CD Japan so I got it off EBay. It looks to be genuine, it's not in Chinese _________________ When people fail at being alive, they die.

Susumu Hirasawa, Paprika OST. One of the finest soundtracks to grace anime ever.
I have the two BECK soundtracks, which are both fantastic. The Beck soundtrack contains the songs used in the anime performed by their original composers/bands and the Keith soundtrack contains the songs as sung in the anime. |

Not got too many soundtracks, very slim collection:
Spirited Away (US version)
Cyber City Oedo 808 (UK version I picked up at random)
El Hazard (UK version which came in the limited edition VHS set)
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (UK version from Beez's DVD set)
I think that's it - pathetic!
Other semi-related CDs are the Gitaroo Man soundtrack (Japanese) and a few J-Pop CDs from the recent 'It Came From Japan' tour. But that's about it. |

I chose not to get involved in the Yuki Kajiura debate through the utter disbelief that someone didn't like her music. Which is always awsome and steeped in mood and more often that not makes the anime she makes the OST for a hell of a lot better for it.
See Saw - dream fields
See Saw - early best
Yuki Kajiura - fiction
Chiaki Ishikawa - Inner Garden
Saeko Chiba - Melody
Saeko Chiba - Everything
Those are my Yuki Kajiura and affiliated albums, both Chiaki Ishikawa and Saeko Chiba vocalling on her works.
Same as I have 3 albums by Masumi Ito and 1 by Yoko Ueno who are the vocalists for Heart of Air (zone of the enders / Haibane Renmei)
Soundtracks are odd ones for me I tend to go for the J-Pop albums instead nowadays. that have the full length opening and Ending themes on them. I am guilty of having a lot of MVMs though
Real CD wise OSTs
GitS movies 1&2
GitS: SAC OST 1,2 & Be human (might order the new JP collection that's comng out too)
Escaflowne OSTs 1-3, lovers only & movie ost
Macross plus OSTs 1-2
Hellsing osts 1-2
Princess nine osts 1-2
haibane renmei ost1
Key the metal Idol osts 1-2
oh my goddess movie ost
BGC Tokyo 2040 osts 1,2 & As Sekiria vocal album
BGC classic vocal collection 1-2
FLCL osts 1-2
ROD:the TV osts 1-2
ROD OVA ost
Boogiepop phantom ost & "music from & inspired by" album
Armitage 3 double ost.
Parasite Eve game ost
Okami game OST
Einhander game ost
There are a few more older miscelanius rubbish ones as well which I'm not listing. _________________ ...

Allow me to enlighten you.
Yuki Kajiura is a good composer. I never said she wasn't. Her music is well thought out and constructed with interesting dynamic changes and qualities. This is also true of many other composers around the anime circuit. But there are some major flaws in her compositions.
Anime music, firstly, should be, for the most part, unnoticeable. Why? Because a show is rarely focussed around the music. The music should aid the flow of storyline and animation, so you are transfixed on that rather than the music itself. I find Kaijura's writing immediately penetrating through the background with something that distracts me, rather than engages me with a storyline.
Her timbre of music is also the same a lot of the time - very electronic-sounding even when real instruments are used, whispy female vocals, latin rhythms - she rarely delves away from this formula. While this works for some shows, using it over and over again is a waste of time. The best theme tune I've heard her do is from "Loveless", which fits with the "mood" of the show perfectly. Why she doesn't divert to this method more often I'll never know :S
I believe, in essence, that Kaijura composes better SONGS than she does music. The only problem is she tries and inputs her knowledge of song composition into her underscoring, which I don't think works all that well!
Finally, I must stress the fact that lots of people have lots of different opinions . I do like to base my opinions on my experiences, in this case with music, but then that's just human nature. I personally believe that Yuki Kaijura's music makes an anime worse rather than better. .hack//SIGN in particular could have been very special had the music been on par rather than just "good". |

Hmm well I couldn't disagree more with this.
Music is a fundamental part of any drama, be it anime or live action.
Taking Noir as an example, as it's one of my personal favourites, which is a series that is totally made by the music. It adds atmosphere, menace, mood etc. A weaker score would have lowered this to a so so story but with the Yuki Kajiura music it's exceptional.
They have an Oscar for best music so ....
Anyway as you say we all have our own tastes and opinions but I had to respond to that _________________ When people fail at being alive, they die.

I really like Susumu Hirasawa's stuff. It's so dreamy and wrong sounding. (I like wrong. XD)
Yoko Kanno is really good too.
As for games, anything Hideki Naganuma and Mizuguchi do is always really funky. |
