I haven't been to one in a while. But the best one I went to was Sheninkai con in London, a good few years ago. These days I just go to the Anime Expo instead.

My friends have been to Minami but say its too small. What have your experiences been of UK conventions? Are they too small, not welcoming to new fans or whatever? What can be done to improve the con experience for fans new and old? And how do they compare to the larger foreign cons?

I've always thought that more should be done to help fans mix instead of everyone staying in their cliques like at school, but only the organisers can do this.

Your thoughts, people

My experience is limited to only two instances of public anime events (I avoided them for years!). I've only really started to get involved in the anime community at large in the last year with mixed results.

The London Expo was really nice and friendly, but perhaps that doesn't really count as a convention in some peoples' eyes. Maybe it's because it dragged in a younger range of fans who haven't yet been tainted or something.

The anime all-nighter was the worst. They were all full of themselves and pretty obnoxious throughout the night, even though they thought they were being clever while doing it. The room smelt really bad as well... Mad

We need less inward-looking geeks and more normal balanced people.

I'm beginning to preffer the london Expo over the dedicated anime cons, I really enjoyed Amecon and will continue to go to that one (next one 2008) as the con is big and generally relaxerd, plus the special guests! so I get to turn into a fanboy and get some VA autographs.

What I like aboutthe expo though is it's more accessable, you get a lot of peple there who are into SF and so might not know a lot about anime, so they're easier to talk to rather than that L33T/clique aspect you get at some cons plus you get to go home and the end of the day.

Having only been to one convention so far (Ayacon 05) I don't think I can be much help here.

What I can say is that at least I like being among people who actually know and understand what I am into rather than pretending or just being ignorant or just plain not knowing anything about my interests (anime included).

Hopefully going to Auchinawa will allow me to once again experience that (best thing is it's in my hometown as well)
