I've literally JUST got back this second, so before I eat my dinner and write my FULL con report, here are the interesting things..
Manga
Beez
- "Bandai Channel" nearly ready (online downloads)
- GURREN LAGANN (sub+dub only, no sub only release)
- SWORD of the STRANGER
ADV
- Nothing really to announce, just a general "what's happening" etc.
MVM
- Still independant, and still letting others test water on online/bluray.
- DAPHNE IN THE BRILLIANT BLUE (confirmed at HMV a week back)
- DESERT PUNK
- SOLTY REI
- ROMEO X JULIET
- The Geneon demise has affected MVM mostly, so expect to see them back tracking to older titles whilst they are finding new ones harder to aquire. Especially with Funimation swiping most of the licences these days.
There's a special note about MVM as well, and I've asked Tony permission to post this, because it is a very interesting fact that he mentioned at his panel.
THIS IS NOT A LICENCE ANNOUNCEMENT
MVM have been approached by the master licensor for Slayers. They have been offered 105 episodes, which may be an error since there aren't 105 episodes, only 104. Now again, I must emphasise that MVM DO NOT have the Licence for Slayers just yet, but they are seriously looking at it, and actually asked the people at his panel our opinions, so I am going to ask for them here as well.
The 104 episodes would cover all FOUR series of Slayers, including the brand new Slayers Revolution series, currently airing in Japan. But he would like to know if the UK anime buying public would be interested in just Slayers Revolution, or if the previous series are valuable enough to invest a lot of money in. Should he decide to go for all four, it could be a gamble of Sailor Moon proportions, and we all remember what Sailor Moon did to MVM as a company. So would you be willing to buy Slayers Revolution from MVM, should they licence it? And if they licenced Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try, do you think that you would buy them as well? And what about the general faceless anime buying public? Would they buy them?
Anyway, I've rambled enough for now. As I say, I'm gonna have my con report, a full news breakdown, "Fulfilling a Promise (Part 3)", and cosplay gallery up later on. If they're not up today, then you can expect them early next week. _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

Never heard of the second, but as for the first - Yay! And good on the dub/sub thing. Never got why Bandai did a sub only release first in the US.

Good news from Beez and MVM!
I've heard nothing but good things about Desert Punk!
As for Slayers, it depends how it happens.
Experience has shown that long running series on single volumes don't work. I certainly won't be interested in 26 4-episode volumes of Slayers
But the Manga Ent model of half season boxsets is far more attractive. Whether it will be commercially viable for MVM to go down that route will be down to their accountants. _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

The question of half-season sets also came up, and what it basicly boils down to is the fact that if you release a 13 episode set, it basicly costs the same to release, but you only have one SKU, one item to put on the shelf. With volumes you have three for the same amount. If something goes wrong, or it bombs, etc, that's it. It's gone. It's not as if they can go back and re-do the release of it. Simply put, the risk of a half-season-set is high, and on most titles that aren't the big shonen ones that Manga are currently farming it just isn't worth it for the reward. Singles are still selling (albeit in the same very small numbers of units they have been for a while) so singles it will still be for a while. _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

It does seem as if it's only Manga that can pull it off. Inuyasha died an early death, as had Initial D apparently.
It's just that with Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho, it doesn't seem to be MVM's strong suit.
I'd love to say the more the merrier when it comes to anime, but most of Slayers is over 10 years old. There has to be an audience first of all, and I don't think there will be enough for Slayers. It'll be another YYH
EDIT: Just realised, no Revelation? They're a little overdue for new licence announcements... _________________ "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

Revelation weren't in attendance. And basicly, they don't really do announcements themselves, they just release what Fort Worth tell them to release, and how they tell them to release it. The point is, Funimation have a LOT of UK licences, since they tend to shop for UK rights with their US ones, but since Navarre used Revelation to distribute in the UK anyway, they just decided to use them instead of MVM. Unfortunatly, Revelation don't have the same presence as MVM, and as such sales took a hit. Apparantly, the sales of FMA plummeted after Revelation took it from MVM. The problem is getting Navarre to understand that MVM can do a better job at releasing some series than Revelation. He's not just "another UK DVD Distributor", he's "a UK ANIME DVD Distributor" (and soon to be Live Action too, MVM are entering the eastern live action film market) _________________ UK Anime DVD of the Month Awards

An interesting point about about some back catalog titles, Vandread was mentioned where the UK rigths are held by a french company and they flatly refuse to release it in, or sub license it to the UK.
half season sets were talked about in reguard to Slayers as Tony did acknowledge it was a lot of anime and in order to catch up for Revolution they'd have to get through the first 3 series in less than a year (by the end of 2009 was stated). Again though All Slayers news in hypothetical at this point.
FLCL has been a really strong seller.
some sales figures were thrown about
RE: red garden and Kurau, red garden by voluem 3 sales has droped to as low as 50 copies.
Box sets traditionally don't sell well, one said something like "the number of people in this room" (maybe 100). _________________ ...

Wow.
Good news on the front page re: .hack/GU movies. Wondered if the recent US news would affect the UK release. _________________ Avatar: Seras Victoria from Hellsing: Ultimate

Yay!
As for the Slayers thing: personally I'd love to see the earlier seasons released on DVD over here, but only as sets as I don't think my wallet (or shelves!) could cope if they went the singles route.
However the show and its artwork from the first three seasons is going to look pretty dated to the average buyer browsing around a shop, plus I think I may be in the minority by wanting the old seasons more than the new one. In fact I'd guess that they might be better off passing up the first three and going for Revolution only... |

OK, as promised I've now written my full convention report, but it is quite sizable. Instead of having to change the format and post it here, I'm just going to link to it at my Anime on DVD blog.
